US Ambassador Max Baucus Celebrates Goal of Aligning Economic and Educational Goals

February 6, 2015 – The American Chamber of Commerce in China and the 100,000 Strong Foundation today announced a new strategic partnership designed to further enhance U.S.-China ties through education. US Ambassador Max Baucus hosted a reception at his residence to celebrate the 100,000 Strong Foundation and its cooperation with the leading US business organization in China.

“This partnership reflects the critical importance of people-to-people exchange as well as the strategic significance of continuing to promote engagement and awareness of China in American youth through education,” said AmCham China Chairman James Zimmerman.

Carola McGiffert, President of the 100,000 Strong Foundation, stated, “We’re very excited to be working with AmCham China to extend our platform to the business community as well as our presence in Beijing. By more closely associating with AmCham China, we hope to promote to its members the Foundation’s strategic and economic importance with respect to U.S.-China relations both present and future.”

Ambassador Baucus applauded the new partnership as an investment in the future, saying, “The future of the US-China relationship lies with our young people, and how they will manage the most pressing strategic and economic challenges of their time. Aligning US business interests with deepening people-to-people ties is a smart investment for the US economy and job growth. The strategic partnership between the 100,000 Strong Foundation and AmCham China will reap significant benefits for American companies, American workers and the future of US-China relations.”

Areas of cooperation between the 100,000 Strong Foundation and AmCham China include co-hosting events such as the Foundation’s Annual Conference and the AmCham China American Ball, high-profile participation in the annual U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE), joint events with the U.S. Embassy and Chinese government, as well as internships and scholarships.

About the 100,000 Strong Foundation

The 100,000 Strong Foundation is a bipartisan, independent nonprofit organization endorsed by both the US and Chinese governments. Its mission is to strengthen US-China economic and strategic relations by encouraging American students to learn Mandarin and study abroad in China. The Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that the future generation of American leaders are prepared to compete, collaborate and succeed in a world in which China plays a large and growing role.

Over the past two years, the 100,000 Strong Foundation has made significant progress. For example, it helped achieve the goal of seeing 100,000 Americans study in China over the past four years; launched a robust student ambassador program featuring young Americans from across the country; and established a growing scholarship fund to provide financial aid to students from underserved and underrepresented communities to study in China.
